South Korea Plans New Semiconductor Industrial Complex in Honam Region Policy

The South Korean government is moving forward with plans to establish a semiconductor industrial complex in the Honam region, with the Gwangju Military Airport area selected as the preferred site.

According to Chief of Staff Kang, companies identified the Gwangju Military Airport as the most suitable location among candidate sites in the region. The site offers approximately 2.5 million pyeong of land that is already leveled due to its previous use as an airport, which is expected to significantly shorten the construction timeline.

The location also benefits from its proximity to downtown Gwangju and a KTX station, providing advantages for securing workforce and residential needs, along with strong logistics connectivity via roads, airports, and ports. The government intends to complete the candidate site selection process soon through discussions with relevant ministries and begin subsequent development procedures.

On the Yongin semiconductor cluster, officials stated that the overall timeline will be accelerated in response to industry requests. This includes speeding up land compensation as well as the supply of electricity and water to enable faster progress on the planned investment in 10 fabs. The Yongin General Industrial Complex is scheduled to begin operations next year, and the government plans to advance the timeline for the Yongin National Industrial Complex to help address global semiconductor demand.

Companies have also raised suggestions regarding core infrastructure such as electricity and water, along with measures to secure skilled personnel and improve living conditions including housing, transportation, and education. Relevant ministers have agreed to continue reviewing these proposals.
