Presiding over the 2nd Democracy Summit, Intae Regional Conference… President Yoon: “Korea will take the lead in promoting democracy”
President Yoon Seok-yeol said on the 30th, “Korea, which hosts the 3rd Democracy Summit, will share and spread the universal values of freedom, human rights and the rule of law, and take the lead in efforts to promote democracy around the world.”
President Yoon, who attended the Indo-Pacific regional meeting of the 2nd Democracy Summit held at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul, said, “This meeting reaffirms the will to defend democracy and marks a milestone when the countries of the Indian-Pacific region, whose geopolitical importance has increased, come together in one place. It means a lot in terms of providing it,” he said.
In particular, he added, “I hope that the insights and wisdom gathered at the first In-Tae regional meeting of the Democracy Summit will serve as a stepping stone to promote anti-corruption and democracy in the region.”
In addition, he said, “Korea has declared its will to contribute to the peace and prosperity of the international community. Today’s meeting is a place to once again confirm and declare our government’s will to implement this humanitarian strategy.”
President Yoon explained, “Democracy is a decision-making system of a community to guarantee freedom and human rights, and the rule of law is a system that enables free coexistence of community members as the rule of law, not the rule of people.”
“Corruption is what distorts the community’s decision-making system,” he said. “Corruption threatens democracy and suppresses freedom.”
He said, “Law-based investigations without sanctuary and strict punishment are the basis for countering corruption,” and “strengthening transparency in each sector of society is the best way to eliminate corruption.”
In response, he emphasized, “Countries that share the universal values of freedom, human rights, rule of law, and democracy must unite in solidarity and take strong action against transnational crimes of corruption.”
Meanwhile, Presidential Office Spokesman Lee Do-woon reported in a written briefing that on the 29th, the ROK and US leaders announced through a joint statement that Korea would host the 3rd Democracy Summit.
He added that President Yoon directly mentioned the fact that he confirmed hosting the 3rd Democracy Summit through the first session of the plenary session and the welcome speech at the regional meeting, and started to play a role as a leader to promote democracy around the world.
