South Korea’s Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) has nominated former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in facilitating dialogue between North Korea and the United States during former President Moon Jae-in’s administration. The nomination, submitted by Rep. Park Sun-won on January 30, 2025, has sparked intense debate both in South Korea and internationally.
The DPK’s recommendation highlights Trump’s efforts to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula and denuclearization. It also emphasizes his recent statements about restoring relations with North Korea during his inauguration as the 47th U.S. President.
Trump’s supporters argue that his diplomatic approach led to significant breakthroughs in U.S.-North Korea relations, including the historic summits with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in 2018 and 2019. These meetings marked the first time a sitting U.S. president met with a North Korean leader.
The additional supportive info can also cite Trump’s role in brokering the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab states, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco. This diplomatic achievement is seen as a significant step towards broader Middle East peace.
Recent developments have seen the terrorist group Hamas begin releasing hostages following Trump’s election to a second term. This has led some to argue that Trump’s approach to Middle East politics has yielded tangible results.
Some critics point out that the Nobel Peace Prize committee has often been accused of bias and making controversial choices. Many expect that despite this nomination, Trump is unlikely to be selected for the award.
However, the ruling People Power Party (PPP) in South Korea has criticized the move as “shameful flattery” aimed at political gain.
Despite this controversy, the nomination serves to make a statement about Trump’s diplomatic achievements and challenges the perceived biases of the Nobel Peace Prize committee.
